About
Shannon Rivera, LISW-CP
I am a licensed therapist located in Charleston, South Carolina. I received my Masters in Psychology at Stony Brook University, and Masters in Social Work at University of Tennessee. I am a certified Veterinary Social Worker which means I specialize in the relationship between humans and animals within the therapy and clinical services I provide.
In addition, I conduct several research projects with Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) that focus on improving patient experiences and therapy animal wellbeing, and I volunteer with Charleston Animal Society as a behavioral foster.
What is Veterinary Social Work
As a veterinary social worker, I support the human side of human-animal relationships. Within the mental health therapy I provide, I understand how important our relationships with animals are, whether it's our own pets or just loving and respecting animals we encounter. I often work with pet owners and individuals/organizations that have a working relationship with animals, such as veterinary clinic and animal shelter staff.
